Friday we had Parent Teacher Conferences, although it is not actually that here. It is called Student Run Goal Setting Conferences. Daniel wrote up his goals for each subject and then discussed them with Ms Lau and myself.
We spent the the weekend at home. It was so nice to be able to cook a couple of meals with all the ingredients - thanks to our shipment! Daniel is so much happier with all his toys here. We spent Saturday putting together his Harry Potter Lego sets. Now that they are put together, we have to figure out where to keep them when he is not playing since we do not have a toy room here!
Randy records the Patriots games, through Dish TV, so that he can watch them. We could watch them live, but that would be in the middle of the night for us. He tries not to read the Boston Globe online or see anything about the game until he can watch it, but it doesn't work that well!
I realized that I haven't done a Cultural Differences/Frustrations 101 in a while. I stopped for a while, because I didn't want it to sound like I am complaining or that I don't like it here. Actually, I like it very much. Are there things that are frustrating - absolutely! Mostly trying to find ingredients to cook with. But overall we like it here. There is a lot to do, we have met many very nice people, and we are experiencing a culture that is very different from our own.
Cultural Differences/Frustrations 101: We were driving on the highway not too long ago when I noticed a bunch of people waiting on the side of the road. They were waiting for a bus. Richard explained that people wait there because it is cheaper to take the bus from this spot instead of at a regular bus stop - the bus driver just pockets the money at this stop. At the official stops the bus fare belongs to the company, but at the unofficial stops it belongs to the bus driver! I was just amazed that they would wait on the highway!
Along the same lines: Near the airport there are always a long line of cars in the break down lane or in the "V" area near an exit ramp. Richard explained that that is where drivers wait for people coming in on planes. That way they don't have to pay the parking. They do not have cell phone lots yet. Again, just amazed that they wait on the highway.
