China - Day 75, Sunday

Yesterday was SAS's (Shanghai American School) Centennial Carnival. This is the PTSA's big fundraiser for the year. This is very similar to the Blessed Sacrament Church Columbus Day Carnival, except doubled - at least! Randy said it felt like a mini Big E (New England Fair!)

Each grade is responsible for 2 games. They must get enough parents to run the games, including set up and clean up. PTSA has restaurants come in to sell food, along with groups in the school that sell different things for fundraisers. They also rented space for vendors to sell their products.

The school hires the bus company to pick up people at their complexes - they had two pick up times. (Some people do not have drivers and some drivers do not work weekends, or in our case it was Richard's birthday so we gave him the weekend off!) I took the early bus for set up volunteers. Randy and Daniel actually came out with neighbors of ours.

I worked one of the fourth grade games from 10:30 to 11:30, but I think I stayed until 12 or 12:30. I worked a game called "Frog Catapult". Afterwards I met up with Randy and Daniel and we had some lunch. We got to try food from different restaurants. I tried Spring Rolls - they were very good. Daniel had cheese pizza. Randy tried Pulled Pork sliders from Bubbas restaurant (a Texan Restaurant)!

Sitting watching the High School Rugby game (SAS - Pudong vs Puxi). Also looking back towards part of the Carnival.

Randy, Jack and Daniel enjoying some French Fries (no salt though!)

After eating, we walked around the vendors. We found a new business that is importing American products for less than City Shop and Pines. The owner told us that she was tired of paying $15 for a box of cereal, so she decided to start her own business. She delivers for free, so I will check out her website and see what she has! I bought some normal sized birthday wrapping paper. The Chinese wrapping paper is only about 18 inches long. Now I can wrap Daniel's birthday presents when our shipment arrives.

Daniel and his friend, Jack, played the games.

Dart gun game. Daniel got all three darts on the board.

Race track game. In the field behind is the boys Rugby game.

Daniel throwing the ball to knock the cans over - he knocked over 3 out of 6. He won a yo-yo.

In this game there were 6 boxes with slits in the back and a piece of paper sticking through it
(you can kind of see the white and yellow paper int he back).
To play, Daniel just had to pick a box and pull the paper to see what prize he won.
 He won a small basketball

This is a tic-tac-toe game. This one was hard - to win you had to throw the bean bag into the four corners and the center.
Daniel didn't win this one.

This is a ring toss booth. Daniel threw 4 hoops and tried to get them over the soda can
or a tall "Pringles" type container. The prize was the soda cans or if he got the tall can
he could pick from the box of prizes. He ringed 2 cans of soda so he asked if he could change
for the prize box. He got 2 blow up guitars instead.

We found a are that was not so loud to sit for a few minutes!

Daniel loved the bounce house activities. His favorite was the Velcro Wall. He had to put on a special suit, climb up a wall and stick to it. He got a kick out of doing that. He also liked the Obstacle Course Bounce house.

Daniel jumped onto the slide and I caught him in the air before he hit the slide!

Randy was excited because the NFL is going to have a theme park here (we think it is for just one day). Thanksgiving weekend. NFL players will be here for this. He can't wait!

This is the NFL booth. Of course it was throwing a football through the tires. Daniel won a small football!

At 4pm we got on the bus to go back to our complex, but there were not enough seats (they do not allow people to stand in the isles), so we had to get off and wait for the 5pm bus. There was just enough seats on the 5pm bus - no extras. This bus went to Jinqiao's Starbucks, (where I caught the bus in the morning) instead of our complex. It is about a fifteen minute drive from our apartment. We decided to eat here and found a great Swiss restaurant where we had Rocelette (eat your heart out Amy, Jen and Cathy!) We will go back real soon to try some of the German dishes!

What a really fun day!
