China - Day 74, Saturday

Yesterday was Spirit Day at Daniel's school. On Thursday, they inducted all the new students into their houses. I asked if they had to wear a sorting hat! (For those who are not Harry Potter fans - Harry Potter attends Hogwarts. All new students are sorted into one of four houses. A sorting hat is placed on their head and the hat determines what house they will belong. The students earn points for their house. The house that has the most points at the end of the year earns the house cup)

At SAS, they do something similar. The students are sorted into four houses. They earn points by showing their spirit and other things as well. Unsure about the house cup though! New students are given a house shirt to wear. Every Friday they are supposed to wear their shirts and each student is given a point if they do. They also earn a point if they bring a water bottle to PE. Still learning about other ways they earn points.

Anyway, Daniel was placed in Dolphins [by the way they are in last place for points right now :( ]. So Thursday they had an assembly for the Elementary and Middle School students. The new students had to wait in the hall until they were called in. Each house sat together as a house. Then they called in the new Pumas, Dolphins, Bears and Falcons, one house at a time. Their house cheered for its new members. It was really sweet.

Friday they did a Spirit Walk. They were supposed to be as loud as they could be. They also could make signs to carry, paint themselves their house colors, etc. Dolphins came in last again! :( Oh well, just the beginning of the year!

On Friday nights, Daniel plays basketball. We go to Dulwich School (a British School) for practice. It is actually more like a basketball camp. They are teaching them the skills needed for basketball. There are students from grade 1 to Middle School, at all different levels from beginner to more advanced. They split them by age and they practice drills. They play a scrimmage game the last fifteen minutes. We like it very much because Daniel is learning the basics. This program is run by 2 PE teachers at SAS. They brought in another coach to help. Most of it is taught in English, but the new coach only speaks Chinese, so they have a teenager there to translate for those who do not speak Chinese. Daniel is the only Westerner. There is a girl from India, the rest are Chinese. Great experience for Daniel.
