China - Day 72, Thursday

Today I needed to go to school for the PTSA meeting, which started at 9am. Our driver does not get back from dropping Randy at work until 9:15 (then school is 40 minutes away) - so I just took the school bus with Daniel. The bus company sets aside 4 seats for parents to ride to school.

I think I have mentioned the school buses before, but... The bus is kind of like a tour bus in the states, not typical US school buses. The seats are comfortable and each seat has a seat belt (love this idea!).

On each bus is a bus monitor. The monitor checks in students as they get on the bus, she makes sure the students are buckled up, and keeps discipline on the bus. She also makes sure that the youngest children are sitting in the front of the bus (but they are not allowed to sit in the front row for safety reasons), the middle school students sit in the middle of the bus and the high school students sit at the back of the bus. The monitor not only checks children getting on the bus in the morning, she also does this in the afternoon for the return trip. The Friday before vacation, when I had to pick Daniel up from school because of his foot injury, she called me to make sure Daniel was not supposed to be on the bus. I was very impressed with that. I am glad to know that they are aware of the children.

The bus company has 150 buses on the road between the Pudong campus (ours) and the Puxi campus. Shanghai American School is one school but 2 campuses (Pudong and Puxi). That's a lot of buses for one school!

That's Daniel's bus waiting outside our complex. The woman standing there is the bus monitor, she has a list of students in her hands that she checks in as the students get on the bus. (she saw me taking the picture and tried to get out of the way!)

After the meeting, Alexis and I went to lunch and then we went for a Pedicure. My first Pedicure here in Shanghai. It was very nice. They served tea and crackers (little ones - about the size of a nickel -  that look like very small pancakes - Daniel likes these). I didn't think the price was too bad for an hour long pedicure - 160 RMB = $25. Next is a massage!
