China - Day 8, Wednesday

Today I feel like a pioneer - no not an innovator, but back in the 1800's. I no longer have a clothes dryer, dishwasher, garbage disposal, hot water for the washing machine...We currently do not have TV, well we do, but it is all in Chinese! Trying to figure out how to get satalite TV so we can get US channels. Hopefully by sometime next week we will have it.

Also trying to figure out how to get a water cooler and water delivered here. We need to use bottled water to brush our teeth, to wash the vegatables, to drink, to cook with, etc. That means a lot of bottled water, which I need to go to the grocery store and carry back the 15 minute walk. I have also been reading that there are a lot of minerals, etc, so the water is very hard. So I am looking into a softing unit and a water purifier so we can at least wash with the tap water.

Need to keep a sense of humor, that's for sure!

Maintanance came today to fix the burners  on the stove. Apparently the reason they were not working is because there was so much gunk built up, from the previous tenants, under it that there was not a good connection. My gas stove at home I can easily lift the burners and clean underneath. The ones here I was not able to lift them and I was afraid to break them. He had to use a screw driver and hammer to get them out, then he had to chisel all the crud away. I scrubbed it down after. At least I know how to take them off now so I can clean them in the future, but they are clean for now at least. Yeah! And all 3 work!!! Slowly the place is getting really clean. Cost me 50RMB which comes to about $7.50. Labor is cheap here! At home it would have cost about $150 to have a service man walk in the door.

As soon as I get a ladder I will clean the ceiling in the kitchen. The ceiling and the light fixtures are all covered in grease but I can't reach it to clean it and it is driving me crazy!

Sense of humor Theresa, sense of humor!
