China - Day 12, Sunday

This morning Iris, young woman from Randy's office, picked Amy up at 7:30. Yes AM for those who know Amy - can you believe it! They were meeting up with another co-worker and going to a Cantonese breakfast. She had Chinese dumplings, one with shrimp and one with meat. She also had deep fried rice and "some meat thing". She really liked the rice. The Asians eat the same kind of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

After breakfast they went to the arcade to play some games. They won a bunch of stuff, like a stuffed Smurf, which they gave to Daniel. They had lunch at a Japanese restaurant.

Then they went to see the Harry Potter movie. Yes it was in English with Chinese subtitles.

Randy, Daniel and I met up with them after they got out of the movie. We took a taxi to the subway. At the subway we had to buy tickets. Randy has a card that is good for the subway and taxis. He added money to the card and then we went to the turn styles. Well apparently only one person can use the card. So I had to go back and get a ticket. I could not figure out how to do it. I saw some students who were Western and asked them if they spoke English. They are actually here from the States studying for the Summer in a Study Abroad program. One of them told me that he was leaving the next day and offered me his card. Then they showed me how to load the money onto the card. After going through security (they have an x-ray scanner for all bags when you go into the train area), I finally made it through!

Amy and Iris met us at the subway station and we headed for dinner. The cinema is in the Financial District. The heart of the city. When you see pictures of Shanghai, this is what you see.

Some of the buildings in the Financial District

Just us!

The picture is a little dark. Most of the time they take
pictures of Shanghai from across the river looking
at this building. Next time you see a picture of Shanghai
look for this. We can see this from a distance
out the window of our apartment.

The walkway is a large circle that goes all the way around the area.

Looking down to the street level. Notice the walkway across the way.

Iris is next to Daniel. Her friend (can't remember her name)
is on the far right.

A large Buddha display outside a shopping mall

All lit up (not us!)

Outside an Apple store

A little blurry because there were so many people that I had
 to keep walking

We ate at Pizza Hut. This is not like any Pizza Hut in the US.

Appetizers: Note the middle ones - snails and octopus!

These are some of the dinner selections

More dinner selections. Of course they also had Pizza.
But it would not be China without rice! By the way,
I had the one on the bottom right. It was very good!

Some of the drink selections. These are non alcoholic.
Chinese drink a lot of fruit juices, Watermelon, blueberry (bottom right),
Daniel had the top left on, Oreo milk shake. He did not
like it. It was very chunky, thin and not very sweet. Definantly not like home. Iris had the
one on the top right. Milk and a bunch of different fruits pieces.

After dinner we went to see the Smurfs movie, again English with Chinese subtitles. Here when you buy movie tickets you actually reserve a seat. Iris bought our tickets online (cheaper). Not general seating. It is like going to a concert, you pick where you want to sit. So if you do not find the seats you want you know to go to a different time! Daniel and Amy liked the movie.

We took the subway home again. On a Sunday night it was packed. I can't imagine how busy it is when Randy goes to work in the mornings and returns in the evenings!

Today is our Anniversary, 29 years! Hard to believe it has been 29 years, when it seems like just yesterday we got married! Where does the time go?
