China - Week 29

During Jennifer's visit we went to the Shanghai Museum. The museum has so many items dating back thousands of years. I have included a few examples of items in the museum. The age of the items is what amazes me!

A wine vessel made late Shang Dynasty,
13 - 11 century BC!

Glazed Pottery Statue of a Heavenly Guardian
Tang Dynasty, 618-907 AD

Deer and Rabbit, 13-11 century BC!

House shaped pillow, 907 -1127 AD. This looks so comfortable!!!

Pottery, 6000-5200 BC.  Amazing

On Chinese New Year day we went to the Jing'an Temple. Many Chinese go to the Temple on Chinese New Years Day to pray to Buddha, so it was very crowded.

This is the temple lit up at night.

The Temple

Inside the temple grounds

Everyone was given incense to burn and use to make a wish. This is Daniel, Randy
Jennifer and Iris lighting their incense.

Iris and Jennifer. See the tower thing to the right (Over Jennifer's shoulder) -
people throw change into it and if they get it in, it is supposed to be good luck.

Cultural differences/frustrations 101: We have bottled water delivered to our apartment. To get water delivered we need to go to management office and buy water coupons. There are three different ones we can choose from: Mineral, distilled and pure. We usually buy the mineral. So today I go to the office to get more coupons and I am told that the company does not have any more mineral water and won't get it back until maybe April or later. This is like Poland Spring Water in the US running out of water and having to wait a couple of months to deliver more. You have to laugh at the absurdity of it! Now I am trying the pure water. Here goes nothing!
